With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Howard Melville Thorsson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Howard peacefully left this world on May 21, 2023, at the age of 87.
Howard was born in Chicago on April 3, 1936, to Herman Melville and Grace Virginia Thorsson. He is preceded in death by his wife Ann and brother John. From an early age, it was evident that he possessed a natural curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. He spent his childhood on Knox Avenue with his beloved dog Captain. He worked as a drug store clerk during his teen years and, upon graduating high school, began his long career at Illinois Bell. Howard served as an Aviation Electronics Mate Airman at Glenview Naval Air Station for eight years.
Howard met and married the love of his life Ann Paublos in August 1961. Together they built a beautiful life with three girls, Heidi (James) Burke, Wendy (Paul) Barrera, and Kristin (Brian) Costello. The family lived in Chicago and Park Ridge, spending summers in Door County and camping throughout the Midwest.
Howard was an avid reader and handyman. He built his own garage after purchasing his parent's house on Knox Ave. He passed his love of gardening to his girls and supplied the neighborhood with fresh tomatoes. Howard learned the game of soccer to become a coach and spent many hours on the sidelines enjoying his grandchildren's play.
Howard will be deeply missed by his children and grandchildren, Bridget, Patrick, Alexander, Erik, and Claire. He will also be fondly remembered by his extended family and friends, who admired his kindness, wisdom, upbeat spirit, and gentle nature.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Howard's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 11 am at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Park Ridge, IL. Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church located at 205 N Prospect Ave, Park Ridge, IL 60068.
Though Howard may no longer be with us in person, his spirit will live on, shining brightly through the memories we all hold dear. May he rest in eternal peace.
