James N. Waller, 96, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025. Born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1929, he was the beloved son of the late James C. and Ethel (née Nelson) Waller. James studied abroad in Mexico City and Madrid and traveled all across Europe with his loving wife Joan early in life before finally settling down in Northbrook. A highlight of their travels was experiencing the Brussels World's Fair of 1958.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army before dedicating his life to education. As a founding educator and Spanish teacher at Glenbrook South High School, he inspired generations of students with his passion for learning and his love of language.
Beyond the classroom, James found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments—birdwatching, traveling (especially to his cherished Sanibel Island, Florida), and staying active through ice skating, daily walks, and regular visits to the health club. A devoted sports fan, he approached every game with the same enthusiasm he brought to every part of life.
James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Joan (née Kellogg), parents and sister, Doris Waller. He is survived by his devoted children, Maxine (Bruce) Barton and Nelson (Susan) Waller; his adoring grandchildren, Bruce Barton, Jimmy Barton, Katie (Brad) Depa, Kimmy Barton, and Brandon Waller.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, IL. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Edna Catholic Church, 2525 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, IL. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request donations be sent to The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on James' behalf.
