My sister Janice was indeed a sports fan. She loved to watch as well as play. I’m a good spectator but a not-so-good participant; however, she needed a partner, and I was handy. Playing catch worked OK, but I got a little tired of losing at ping-pong; so she would give me 15 points to start the game as incentive. She still won quite a few of the matches. It was demoralizing. On a happier note, when we were kids, Christmas shopping began on December 8th for us. That was the feast of the Immaculate Conception and a day off from Catholic school. Janice was six years older than me, and our parents put her in charge of our bus trip to Mitchell Street (Milwaukee’s south side downtown). We didn’t receive an allowance growing up, but our Dad would give us each $25 to use for buying gifts for the other four members of our family. You have to remember that, in the 1950’s, a man’s dress shirt cost $4.98 (no sales tax at the time); so we could buy the gifts and still have money left to eat at Schuster’s lunch counter (a real treat). Then we would go home and wrap the gifts while listening to Christmas music. It was fun. One summer day, Janice and her neighbor friend Corrinne were playing in the garage and had locked me (the pesty little sister) out. They stood at the garage window chanting “Na na na na na, you can’t come in.” Our Dad was cutting grass and his broom was leaning against the garage, so I picked it up and threw it at the window, breaking it. Our Dad had observed the whole incident. I was sent into the house, Corrinne was sent home and Janice had to clean up the glass for taunting me. She always thought her getting punished rather than me was unfair. I, on the other hand, thought it was perfect justice. Of course, Dad had to repair the window. He kept pieces of glass in the basement since playing ball in the alley led to many broken windows. Because Janice was six years older than me, we had different interests growing up. She was always waiting for me to grow out of the phase I was in. Somehow, when we got into our 20’s, got married and had children, we were finally in the same phase; and I WILL MISS HER DEARLY. Kay

Janice was 11 yrs older than her little sister Kay ( my very best friend ) I knew her to be a kind, warm person. Loved to laugh and ready to join in on anything. Kay and I visited Janice and Ray in D.C. when Tom was born. She'll be missed. She was genuinely honest and was interested in whatever you had to say. Suzie

My Aunt Janice was such a vibrant woman! I always looked forward to, and thoroughly enjoyed, spending time with her. Though I have a ton of memories I could share, one sticks out like a sore thumb... or a green thumb, I should say! My Texas garden, or the few potted plants I refer to as my “garden,” features a few resilient plants...and some that have seen better days. But Aunt Janice’s garden? It was always lush, and full of the most succulent, juicy, and healthy vegetables one could grow! I remember one trip in particular, when I was 13. (Aunt Janice and Aunt Kay took all of us grand nieces and nephews for a visit as we bridged the path to teen-hood... the brave hearts!!) We walked out into her lush garden on a warm summer day, discussing making homemade spaghetti for dinner. Aunt Janice rattled off ingredients while I picked them from the garden. It was amazing how everything was there, growing for us! When I told her I was hungry, she picked a snap pea off of a vine and said, “then eat!” and tossed it straight into her mouth! I just sat there in awe, and I am STILL envious. Aunt Janice, you will surely be missed, but I am thankful for the memories!

Being the oldest child and a full 5 years older, I was the boss, Janice was the pickle in the middle and Kay (6 years later) was the baby. We got along very well despite the difference in ages. There were a few squabbles doing dishes (no dishwasher) but not bad considering. Mostly the one drying would reject dishes as being still dirty. Have great memories of our summers on the farm. The car trip up and back was not much fun. No air conditioning, bad shocks and sometimes we had to hold towels to the roof as it leaked in the rain. But once we got there it was wonderful. The first thing Janice did was run to the barn to find the new cats Janice did very well in school. The day before an exam I would be burning the midnight oil, She didn't need to cram, she was ready. She had a wonderful garden and always canned her tomatoes. My trips there always included her making her wonderful home-made tomato soup. It was heaven along with a side of potato pancakes. Janice was always the best at any mind games. She was so quick with the answers. My favorite show was "Jeopardy" but I did not want to watch it with Janice as she always beat the clock. She almost always got the Final Jeopardy answer too. She was so kind and would never hurt anyones feelings. Had tremendous love for her children and family. I will really miss our sister's monthly 3-way phone call. It will not be the same without her. Marian

My Aunt Janice was the strongest woman I have ever met!!! She was an upbeat person every time I was around her. Now, she could get mad! But was always quick to apologize, and it was sincere! I would look forward to our time together. She always wanted to show us a good time. Especially, showing off her Beloved Chicago!! I will miss her terribly!! But I can just see her playing Sheepshead with her dad, my dad and Ray up in Heaven!! Have fun Aunt Janice!!!
