Jo Ann Sulla was born on March 31, 1933, in Lemmon, SD, to Walter Mowry and Pearl (nee Rail) Mowry. She passed away on August 27, 2022, in Arlington Heights.
Jo Ann attended high school at St. Martin's Academy in Sturgis, SD. After a year of college in Minnesota, Jo Ann decided to move to Chicago to pursue a career in photography. While working in Chicago, she met Tony Sulla at Cappa Club, a Holy Name Cathedral young adults' group, and they were married at the Cathedral in June 1955. They moved to Arlington Heights in 1961. Jo Ann and Tony were married almost 66 years.
As a PTA room mother and board member, she stayed active in her sons' elementary school. Jo Ann had a talent and passion for both cooking and baking. After the boys had grown, Jo Ann worked for St. Edna Catholic Church as the parish cook for over 25 years. Besides making delicious daily meals for the priests at the rectory, her special event meals were legendary throughout the Chicago Archdiocese. She was active in St. Edna's Women's Guild and enjoyed making costumes for their Snack Theatre, even all those darn bell bottoms. Jo Ann taught quilting classes at the Arlington Heights Senior Center. She made many beautiful quilts and countless other stitched and knit projects, including numerous Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren. When not solving the world's problems over coffee with family and friends, Jo Ann enjoyed reading mysteries and thrillers borrowed from the Arlington Heights Library. Jo Ann loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and was loved by all.
Jo Ann is survived by her children, Thomas (Debra) Sulla, Daniel (Deanne) Sulla, and Robert (Leslie) Sulla; grandchildren, Catherine (Caleb Norton) Sulla, Erin Sulla, Matthew Sulla, Elizabeth Sulla; siblings John Mowry and Mary (James) Knapp; and many nieces and nephews.
Jo Ann is preceded in death by her husband Tony; her parents; and brother Roger (June) Mowry.
