John is preceded in death by his wife Eileen (nee Marsh) Neumann, his parents and siblings Francis Neumann, Dorothy Henkel, Sr. Stephanie Neumann and Therese Neumann.
John attended two years at Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary School and finished the last two years of high school at St. George.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He was stationed at the then Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan. He held the rank of Tech Sargent and worked as a Welfare Specialist, which included duties as a chaplain’s assistant. In this capacity, he traveled to Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and other nearby states to help the enlisted with special problems.
He went on to earn a B.S. in Business Administration from Loyola University.
He married Eileen Marsh, his wife of 61 years on August 20, 1955. She died Dec. 11, 2016. They raised 10 children while living in Palatine.
John spent 42 years at International Mineral and Chemical Corporation as Manager of Risk Management. Part of his duties were Vice President of Carnfort Ltd. Insurance Co., a subsidiary of IMC.
In his retirement, John was a State of IL Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) counselor assisting seniors with taxes and Medicare. He also found his niche in retirement as an usher at Arlington Park Race Track.
John valued family more than anything. He and Eileen enjoyed watching the family grow to ten children, twenty grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. A planner at heart, he arranged month long family camping vacations driving across the U.S. every summer. He and Eileen made every reunion, holiday, sacrament and birthday, a special time to make lifetime memories. He kept up with all the happenings in his grandchildren’s lives and phone calls or visits brought big smiles to his face. As a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers and Notre Dame, he enjoyed a friendly bet with his grandkids on games but would never wager more than $1.00. He was an avid gardener and loved nature.
John’s love of his faith and God was evident in his servant’s heart, volunteering as a lector, school board member and boys’ basketball coach at St. Theresa School. He also served on the school board at Sacred Heart of Mary High School. He provided transportation to mass for Little City residents and helped at the PADS homeless shelter while living in Palatine. He loved his time in Cary at Saints Peter & Paul Church where he volunteered in grounds, funeral and choir ministries. He was a lector at Clare Oaks retirement community and assisted nuns to and from masses.
