John J. Sowa, U.S. Army Veteran, was born on November 23, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to Frank and Anna (nee Jezioro) Sowa. He died on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
While serving his country in the Army during WWII, Johnny served in the European Theater of Operations in the 773rd Tank Destroyed Battalion as a Gun Crewman and was wounded in action in Belgium on January 14, 1945, for which he received the Purple Heart; he also received the Bronze Star and the ETO and World War II Victory Medal. Johnny worked as a Set-Up Operator for Automatic Electric for thirty-eight (38) years. He was a member of and past officer for the Disabled American Veterans charitable organization.
John is survived by his spouse of sixty-eight (68) years Florence (nee Sobczyk); daughters, Kathleen (Jude) Sciacca and Debra Cyganek; grandchildren, Jessica (Brett) Leonette, Marissa Sciacca, Mark Sciacca, Michael Cyganek, Brian Cyganek; great-grandson, Luca Leonette; sister, Dorothy Sowa.
He was preceded in death by several siblings and his parents.
Visitation is on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 from 3:00pm until 8:00pm, at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd. (4 blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Prayers are at 9:00 am, Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the funeral home, proceeding to St. Mary Church, 10 N. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove, IL for Mass at 10:00 am. Interment Private.
