

Kathy Eggert died on June 11 after a long, hard fight with early onset Alzheimer’s. She is survived by her husband, Don, and children, Carolyn (Matt Page), Jessica, and Don III. She is also survived by her siblings, Bill (Margo) Fickenscher, Jan Chicka, Jim (Sherri) Fickenscher, and Sue (Larry) Wagner and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Dee Fickenscher.
She was a wonderful person; she was smart, talented, energetic, and nice. She graduated cum Laude from Bradley University after three years of study with a degree in Chemistry. She joined Pi Beta Phi while at Bradley. Kathy worked as a chemist for Nalco Chemical for five years before leaving the workforce to raise her children. After her children were grown, she taught middle school chemistry in Chicago Public Schools for ten years. Kathy also earned a Master’s in Education from University of Illinois - Chicago.
Kathy was adept at both applying and teaching chemistry. In addition to teaching, Kathy was member of a CPS science curriculum development group for several years. She received an ‘Outstanding Teacher of Science’ award from ISTA/Exxon Mobile for her work. She also achieved the qualifications to teach mathematics.
She was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Long Grove IL for many years. Kathy showed her faith by her works. The list of her many ministries includes Worship and Music Church Council member, Praise Team founder and member, LOGOS program founder and member, Vacation Bible School coordinator, Christmas Program coordinator, as well as leadership/participation in many other activities and groups.
Kathy had a long, deep interest and appreciation for education. She was elected to two four-year terms on the Fremont District #79 school board. She served as school board vice president for two years and as president for four years. During her time on the board, Fremont passed referendums for both building schools and for increased education funding of schools - they built a new school, hired a new superintendent, and added academic programs. Kathy was deeply involved with the review and development of school policy and curriculum.
She was an excellent cook, an energetic homemaker, an effective seamstress, an accomplished piano player, and a skilled gardener among her many talents. She treated everyone around her as her friend. She did everything well. She was always positive, usually smiling, and very rarely complained. Kathy gave her time generously to those that needed it. She was just fun to be around.
Kathy was a caring and giving mother and wife. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her but will especially be missed by her family.
A Memorial Visitation will be held Friday, June 25, 2021, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Hope Lutheran Church, 1660 Checker Road, Long Grove, IL 60047. Memorial Visitation will also be held Saturday, June 26, 2021, from 10:00 am until Kathy’s 11:00 am Memorial Service at Hope Lutheran Church.
