Lois Marie Harty was born on February 6, 1925 in Detroit, MI to Thomas and Marie (nee Girard) O'Donovan. She died on July 9, 2023 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.
Lois, attended All Saints School, in Detroit, MI. She was an exceptional student there. When it came time for college, she was offered a scholarship. Lois, opted to go into the working world instead. In that summer of 1942, she began volunteer work as a Red Cross Nurses Aide at Providence Hospital in Detroit. She volunteered there for three years, assisting in the evening as she was employed elsewhere during the day. It wasn't long after that when Lois, met her husband-to-be, Harold "Hi" Harty. She was employed as his secretary. For each of them it was "love at first sight". They were married the first of February, 1945. Hi and Lois, raised three children over the years and were outstanding parents!
In 1965, Hi was transferred to Illinois. Hi and Lois, purchased a home in Glenview. It was there that Lois, in addition to being involved in the children's activities and interests, serving on Parish boards and guilds, and volunteering at a local nursing home, decided to start her own antique business: The Harty House Country Collection! It soon became her passion, and lasted for over 40 years! She and Hi, made life-long friends through that successful business; she was an antique dealer extraordinaire!!
Lois, was never idle! In the spring of 1978, she broke her hip. She made good use of her recuperation time by crocheting whimsical Christmas ornaments. They were so colorful and unique that a major department store in the area purchased them from Lois, to sell as part of their Christmas inventory! By the time Christmas arrived she had crocheted over 700 ornaments! This truly illustrates her boundless energy and creativeness!
In 1980, Hi and Lois retired to Hi's boyhood home in Allegan, MI. Lois continued with her antique business and both she and Hi, served on many community boards. Many happy times were spent in Allegan with family and friends. They were married for 65 years until Hi died in 2010.
After Hi's death, Lois moved back to Illinois to The Lutheran Home. She loved her new home at Hearthstone Assisted Living. She so treasured her friends there!
Lois is survived by her children Kevin (Noreen) Harty, Karen (Russell) Dempsey and Scott (Janice) Harty; her grandchildren Erin (Josh) Hancock, Lauren (Richard) Brecklin, Christopher (Jen) Harty, Amber Stokosa, Melody (Phil) Worley, Patrick Harty and Matthew Harty; her great-grandchildren Henley Brecklin, Vivienne Hancock, Quinn Brecklin and Alexis Harty; as well as her sister Norma (late Jack) Kearney; she is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
