Lynn M. Smith, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, at her home in Prairie View, IL. Born on March 15, 1957, in Chicago, IL, Lynn was the cherished daughter of the late Joseph and Eleanor Walter, and throughout her life, she exemplified the warmth and nurturing spirit she inherited from her parents.
Lynn's heart was always full of love, especially for her family. She was the loving wife of Steve Smith for 33 years, whose partnership with Lynn was filled with mutual respect, laughter, and an abundance of care. She was a dear mother to Stephanie Cherry (Jason) Smith Williams and Rory Francis (Renee) Smith, guiding them with her wisdom and supporting them unconditionally in all their endeavors. Her role as a proud grandmother to Molly, Ronan, Dagny, Reese, Vivienne, and Ivy was a source of immense joy. She was also a proud sister to the late Joseph Walter. Lynn's laughter and stories will be deeply missed during family gatherings.
Her sisters, Karen (Mark) Miller and Sharon (John) Sobestanovich, will remember Lynn as a fond sister whose spirit and energy were the glue that strengthened the bonds of their family. She also leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for her many loving nieces and nephews, who will carry forward her lessons of kindness and generosity.
Lynn had a passion for life that was evident in her many interests. She loved gardening, tending to her plants with the same care and attention she gave to her relationships. Her enjoyment of music filled her home with melodies that matched the rhythm of her life. An exceptional cook, Lynn was amazing at making her own stocks, soups, and her famous Lynn-chiladas. She had a particular interest in French cooking, always eager to explore new culinary horizons.
Those who knew Lynn knew of her love for a glass of wine with dinner, a simple pleasure that was one of her many ways of savoring the moment. Above all, her love for her grandkids was paramount, and she cherished every second spent with them. Her adventurous spirit led her to enjoy hiking in Telluride, Colorado, where she embraced the beauty of nature and the challenge of the trails.
Lynn's home was a sanctuary for many creatures, including the butterflies she raised in her kitchen. She nurtured them from caterpillars to their full majesty, releasing them once grown, a beautiful metaphor for her own nurturing nature towards everyone she loved.
The words that best describe Lynn are loving, kind, and spirited. Her vivacity and genuine concern for others made her a beloved figure in her community and her absence will be felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Lynn's life was a testament to the beauty of caring for others and the joy of living each day with purpose and passion. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were touched by her gracious spirit. As we say farewell to Lynn M. Smith, we celebrate her remarkable life and the countless ways in which she made our world a better place. Her memory will be treasured forever as a guiding light and an inspiration to live life with love at the forefront.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Lynn’s honor be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.
