Mary T. Bornhofen

Of Arlington Heights

Mary T. Bornhofen was born May 31, 1933 in Chicago to William and Mary Cecilia (nee Farrell) O'Rourke. She passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mary graduated from Immaculata High School in Chicago 1951. She began her career at Illinois Bell right out of High School as a messenger and worked her way up to Service Representative in Engineering. After 7 years, she started a new chapter in her life with her first born Mary Beth. As her family grew, she went to work at JCPenney, fine jewelry for the Christmas holidays in Woodfield Mall. She was asked to stay and work in major appliances. Mary excelled as the only sales woman in the department as she knew how to relate to the person using the appliances. Six years later, she went to work at Unitrode which merged with Texas Instruments, as administrator for mid America sales. Mary retired at 62 to begin her favorite role as Granny to her eleven grandchildren.

Mary liked watching Notre Dame Football and listening to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. She loved to travel as her favorite destination was Las Vegas for the shows. Mary's favorite things to do were always with her family. She hosted the best St. Patty's Day parties. She was the greatest story teller as she captivated everyone's hearts with her gift of making you feel like you were the most special person in the room. She will surely be missed by everyone.

Mary is survived by her children Mary Beth (Charles) Essig of Carol Stream, Sue (Paul) Taramelli of Carol Stream, Kim (Joe) Stubits of Winfield, Kurt Bornhofen of Arlington Heights and Gerald W. Bornhofen of Chicago; her grandchildren Matthew, Michael, Christopher, Lindsey, Meghan, Allison, Kelly, Madelyn, Jack, Mark and Ryan as well as her great-grandchildren Kensey, Ella, Riley, Jaxson, Kaia, Mason and Dawson.

She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald F. Bornhofen, her parents as well as her siblings William O'Rourke, Jack (late Dolly) O'Rourke, Margaret (late Russ) Cerney and Edward T. O'Rourke.

Visitation Sunday, November 19, 2023, from 3:00pm until 7:00pm at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road, (4 blocks south of Palatine Road) Arlington Heights and on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 10:00am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00am at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, 440 South Mitchell Avenue, Arlington Heights. Interment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the American Heart Association.
