ADD A MEMORY
Tat (Jeff) Luk

February 11, 2019

My name is Tat Luk, mom Oberhart, my American mother, called me Jeff. I came to Chicago in 1976 to attend college at IIT. I did not know too many friends but Michael Oberhart was an exception. I got to know him and his family when he became my roommate. I was extremely honored when mom Oberhart gave me the opportunity to join her family by taking me in as one of her kids. I had the special privilege to join the Oberhart family Thanksgiving dinner every year since. The gatherings were always filled with warmth and joy and always fun. She was never afraid of expressing herself. When I graduated with my PHD degree, she was the one who stood up and shouted: “That is my boy”! The Oberhart family gave me a lot of tender loving care and my second family away from Hong Kong.
Mom used to tell us how embarrassed Michael was when she showed up at his college resident for a surprise birthday party. Being someone who always wanted to outsmart mom, I once joked that she was not treating her sons equally as I never had my share. Years later, she showed up one day at my company without me knowing. Mom’s social engineering skill was really outstanding. She knew no one in my company, yet she was able to convince our company receptionist to let her into our office. In addition, she was able to rally my business associates to help her lay out the decoration, drinks, and food in a conference room. Imagine how embarrassed a 40+-year-old “kid” was when he was surprised by the confetti, party horns, balloons, birthday cake, candles and most importantly, his American mom. Michael, now we are even.
My wife, Elaine, and my son, Vincent, are equally grateful to mom and the Oberhart family for their generosity of letting us be part of the family. We are going to forever miss our beloved mom but we are committed to continuing to extend her love to others. Rest in peace, you are always in our memory, mom.
From Jeff, Elaine and Vincent - The family of your first Chinese son.
