Michelle was a third year law student when I arrived at Wash U in 1982. She had volunteered to mentor new law students, and she hosted a potluck at her home. I remember she had a complete collection of MASH episodes that she had recorded on videotape. Talk about dedication! We became friends. It was especially nice that she was from St. Louis, and she made me feel at home. A few summers later, we drove to the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival. It was my first time ever going camping and I was nervous. What if it rains? , I asked her. Then we’ll camp in the rain, she replied! Of course, we pitched our tent in the rain! We proceeded to have a fabulous time! She started her career in the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, always professional, but with compassion for the human costs. She could understand why I wanted to be a public defender, and always tried to do justice. Her life was a testament to courage and compassion. The world, and our profession, has lost a fine attorney.A fine person. A fine friend. My condolences to her family. Ruth McBetg

Michelle and I shared office space at the State's Attorney's Office at the beginning of our careers. She was smart and very witty, always fun to be around. We got to be good friends. We discussed whether McHenry county was ready for her to come out a number of times. When she finally did, it was like oh, you thought we didn't already know that? I don't recall anyone having a negative reaction. Everyone liked Michelle. We had a number of cases against each other over the 35 years since and she was always a pleasure to work with. I will miss her quick smile and sharp wit always. We lost her far too soon.

Barb, I am so sorry for your loss. I will remember Michelle for her huge personality and quick wit. And for all her hard work for St. Philip’s on Vestry and as a warden during tough, transitional times. Condolences to you and all Michelle’s friends and family. Madeline Rorrie

I cherish the memories of the 8 years Michelle and I shared as law partners. I couldn't have picked a better person to hang up my shingle with. Having her around the office was a joy. Her warmth and wit couldn't help but brighten your day. She understood what made for a good lawyer. She of course had a sharp mind and intellect. I think her greatest skill, however, was what we lawyers call "client control". She was a counselor, not a cheerleader. She was sensitive and compassionate to her client's troubles, but would not allow their passions or unreasonableness to rule the day. She knew when and how to tell a client "no", which is often the best advice a lawyer can give. Her ethics were beyond reproach. She was pragmatic in her approach to business and the law, when she could be, but never to the exclusion of doing always what was honest and principled. She will be missed dearly by her professional colleagues and by her many friends, which I am glad to say included me.

I will remember the way Michelle was always willing to jump in and lend a helping hand when she and Barb were parishioners at St. Philip's Church. I served on Vestry with Michelle, and her leadership was invaluable and much appreciated. I remember fondly all of the hilarious conversations we used to have during coffee hour. I remember so vividly going to Michelle's office to tax plan and we laughed so hard because we kept getting off topic and she yelled "Squirrel"!! She will be missed!

I will miss having cases with Michelle. I am very saddened by her passing. She was direct and practical. My condolences to all of her friends and family.
