Philip J. Brice was born on October 21,1928 in Chicago to John and Margaret (nee Stookey) Brice. He died Thursday, February 17, 2022, in Wheeling.
Philip served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was wounded during battle and was awarded the Purple Heart. An Award he was extremely proud of. Philip worked at Jewel Food Stores for 42 years. During those years Philip held a number of positions. Starting as a Butcher and working his way to become a District Manager. The Produce department was his specialty. He was affectionately known as Crispy Phil. Philip and Joan raised their family in Arlington Heights. They were members of St. James Catholic Church in Arlington Heights in the late 50’s to the late 60’s, where Philip served as the Head Usher for the 9:15 am Mass. Then they attended St. Raymond of Penafort Catholic Church in the late 60’s thru the mid 80’s. where Philip was head usher at the 10:45 am Mass. Philip was a Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Trooper Leader in Arlington Heights. Philip and Joan retired to the Myrtle Beach area in South Carolina. Philip was very involved with the Knights of Columbus. Philip was a 4th degree Knight, and became the Financial Secretary for the Georgetown, SC Council and Commander of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Honor Guard. He was named “Sir Knight of the Year” in 2017. He was member of Precious Blood Catholic Church in Pauley’s Island, SC. Philip was an extraordinary eucharistic minister in which he took Holy Communion to the homebound and to those in assisted living facilities and very active in many Parish activities. He was the Homeowner Association President for his home in Murrells Inlet, SC. Philip enjoyed golf and went on many golf trips. His Golf Course Home in Murrells Inlet was off the 17th green on Wachesaw East Golf Course. During the summer he always took the family on vacations in which the family traveled all over the United States.
Due to health reasons Philip and Joan moved back to Arlington Heights to be with family. Philip was surrounded by family at his death.
Philip is survived by his spouse of 71 years, Joan (nee Schmidt); children, Jeffrey (Janet) Brice, Stephen (Paula) Brice, Deborah (Allen) Cheterbok, Cynthia (Sam) Donatucci and Scott (Catherine Shoemaker) Brice; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, James (Rosemary) Brice and Thomas (Dolores) Brice.
Visitation Thursday, March 3, 2022 from 9:00 am until the 10:00 am Funeral Mass at St. Raymond of Penafort Catholic Church, 301 S. Ioka Ave., Mt. Prospect, IL 60056. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
Memorial Service will be held at Precious Blood Catholic Church Pawleys Island, SC in Late March or April.
