Randy Witek, 73, of Arlington Heights, passed away at home on May 24, 2025 surrounded by family. Born October 27, 1951, Randy lived a life that was, if nothing else, well-documented, well-planned, well-loved and well-bowled.
Randy was the son of Betsy and John Witek Sr. of Chicago. He leaves behind his wife, Holly Witek (Roschman); his daughter, Dr. Caroline Witek (Charlie Oram); his son, Alex Vitello (Christi Vitello); his brother, Dr. John Witek (Dr. Mary Melbo); and his granddaughters, Maddie and Sammie Vitello, who will now have to find someone else to explain the night sky and arrangement of constellations.
Randy, a proud graduate of Taft High School Chicago and Northern Illinois University (Master's in Computer Science), spent his career as a software developer. He was particularly proud of the fact that his code is still running somewhere in the world.
When he wasn't on the job, Randy could be found on the golf course (occasionally breaking 80, once even hitting a 72), at the bowling alley with his team “Pin-Consistent”, or playing his Rickenbacker guitar. He also enjoyed attending concerts, from Alice Cooper to Steven Wilson, proving that his taste in music had evolved since the 70s. Woody and Maggie, his beloved dogs, were expertly trained, mostly because Randy liked having someone around who would listen intently.
Randy took immense pride in his children. He was especially thrilled when Caroline earned her Psy.D., finally giving him someone in the family who could explain him.
And speaking of family, let's not forget the infamous trip to England in 1998. Think "National Lampoon's European Vacation," but with more spreadsheets. Every minute was scheduled, every meal pre-booked, and every historical site thoroughly researched. While the family may have complained at the time, they now realize it was a masterclass in efficient sightseeing (and a testament to Randy's ability to condense a country’s entire history into a single week).
Beneath the sarcasm and meticulously planned itineraries, Randy was a deeply caring person who loved his family. He was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need, whether it was fixing a computer, offering advice, or simply sharing a laugh. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Randy's life will be held on Thursday, May 29, Visitation time will be from 10:00 - 11:00 AM, with service starting at 11:00 AM at Glueckert funeral home. Attendees are encouraged to share their favorite "Randy" stories.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Randy's memory can be made to the charity of your choice, PAWS Chicago being one of his favorites.
