Sophie J. Dougherty (née Tual), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, at the age of 65. Born on November 23, 1960, in France, Sophie was the cherished daughter of Charles and Eliane Tual (née Duchatel).
She is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Dennis Dougherty; her cherished children, Sydney (John) Timpe and Corey Dougherty; dear grandson, Ledger Timpe; and beloved sister, Nathalie Seretis.
At the age of nine, Sophie moved with her family from France to Canada, and two years later settled in the United States. Together with her parents and sister, they quickly embraced American life while holding close the values of family and togetherness that defined her. Sophie was a devoted daughter who maintained a deep and loving bond with her parents throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Eliane and Charles Tual.
Sophie was a natural caretaker who fiercely loved her family. She was exceptionally thoughtful, with a rare gift for remembering the smallest details and finding the perfect “this made me think of you” gifts. Weekly family dinners were a treasured tradition, where she lovingly prepared everyone’s favorite meals, including baked spaghetti, deviled eggs, pork chops, shrimp diablo, and so many more.
In recent years, nothing brought Sophie more joy than being a grandmother, lovingly known as “Meme.” Ledger quickly became the light of her life and the center of her universe. She was present for every moment, big and small, from his first bath in the hospital or his first haircut to gymnastics, soccer, and swimming. Each night, Ledger eagerly awaited their daily FaceTime calls, always smiling as he asked to “call Meme.”
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, Sophie faced her illness with courage and determination. She acted swiftly, fought bravely, and entered remission five years later, where she remained.
Sophie’s deep love, thoughtfulness, and strength leave an immeasurable void. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, February 7, 2026 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N Arlington Heights Rd, Arlington Heights, IL. The funeral service will start at 4 p.m.
