Steven W. Downs

Steven "Steve" William Downs was born on February 11, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois to William and Shirley (nee Ostling) Downs. He passed away on May 1, 2022 at Northwest Community Healthcare in Arlington Heights, IL with his loving wife by his side.

Steve will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, loyalty, goofy sense of humor, and steadfast dedication to his wife and family.

A natural athlete, Steve was captain of the William Howard Taft High School baseball team that won the 1968 Chicago Public League championship and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. He passed on his athleticism and love of sports to his three sons. Everyone who knew Steve knew his passion for the Chicago Bears. A long-time season ticket holder, he enjoyed going to games with his sons and sharing his enthusiasm for the Bears with his grandchildren.

Steve was a doting grandfather who loved watching his grandchildren play various sports, especially hockey and lacrosse, and watching his granddaughters dance. He also loved playing golf, watching musical theatre, enjoying dinner and cards with friends and family, and could occasionally be found playing a little blackjack at the casino.

Steve is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Rose Downs (nee Chavich); his sons Brian (Nina) Downs, David (Cara) Downs and Steven (Jess) Downs; his grandchildren Gianna, Liam, Jameson, Emily, Ryder, Nora and Keaton; his brothers Thomas (Gayle) Downs, Kevin Downs and Keith (Karen) Downs; and many nieces and nephews. Steve was a great friend to countless others.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation Thursday, May 5, 2022 from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd.. 1520 North Arlington Heights Road ( 4 blocks south of Palatine Road) Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Funeral Mass Friday, May 6, 2022 at 10:00 am at St. Edna Catholic Church 2525 North Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or to the charity of your choice.
