Susan "Sue" Libby, 89, passed away peacefully at home after a life well-lived. Beloved wife of her devoted husband, John “Gordon”, for 66 years, Sue was the cherished mother of Anne, Katy, Steven, and Mary (Adam). She was blessed with wonderful in-laws and was a proud and loving grandmother to Jacob, Tyler, Gordy, Trevor, and Lilly, each of whom brought her endless joy and pride. A devoted aunt, she also held a special place in the hearts of her nieces and nephews—Andrew (Yvette,) Pennell, Margaret, Brooke, Kailin, and grand-nephews Ueli, Nicholas (Brooke,) Benjamin (Silvia,) and grand-niece Lauren.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Mike and Thora, and her brother, Michael (Joanie).
Sue was one of five women in her business school class at Northwestern University, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority; she went on to work in retail and recruiting. She sewed countless Halloween costumes and special outfits, and served in the PTA and the Girl Scouts. As a volunteer for many years at Wheeling High School, she worked with educators to coordinate the annual Madrigal Dinner and supported countless students as they completed college applications.
Sue loved strong coffee, rare steak, garlic, reading, birds, plays on words, and a “Minnesota blue” sky. She will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, intelligence, and the quiet strength she carried throughout her life. Her spicy and sassy sense of humor will long be remembered. She leaves behind lifelong friends whose friendship and support she greatly valued, including the women of the Cambridge Countryside Women’s Club, her bridge group, and her childhood friend Mary.
Sue's family has boundless gratitude for Dr. B, Amata, Sara, Betty S, Betty N, Nike, Serah, Tambari, Amy, Jaclyn, and everyone else who cared for her with great love, humor, and skill.
Sue will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. The family will hold a commemorative gathering at a later date.
