Thomas G. McGavin

Thomas G. McGavin, age 96, was born December 24, 1927 and at rest October 1, 2024. Beloved husband of 70 years to Lois June McGavin (nee Kalinowski). Loving father of Karen (Bill) Wiggs and Carolyn (Rich Connors) McGavin. Cherished Grandpa of David (Katie) Wiggs and Kristin (Jimmy) Malewig. Greatest great-grandpa to McKenzie Rose and Josie June. Brother-in-law to Donald Steffens and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elizabeth McGavin, and his twin brother and best friend, Chuck McGavin.

Tom and Lois traveled extensively with family and friends, especially after his retirement from The First National Bank of Chicago, where he enjoyed a 40 year career, met his wife and made lifelong friends. Tom served in the Army Air Corp where he began boxing and he continued a successful amateur boxing career in Chicago, including competing in Golden Gloves’ competitions. Let it be known , Tom, was a proud Southpaw, as he would tell anyone he met. Tom was an avid Chicago sports fan, especially his beloved Chicago White Sox. He was a gifted athlete and was part of the traveling Chicago Park District 16” softball league in the 60’s. He also played tennis, volleyball and golf well into his 80’s. Tom was very proud of his pure Scottish heritage and passed the pride to his children. He was a devoted Christian and a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Niles. Tom’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, which he did at every opportunity. He will be greatly missed by anyone whose life he touched. Tom remained a true gentleman to the end. We know our Tom is resting in peace and is with his beloved wife, Lois.

Private memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL. Private interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
