Dr. Thomas R. Rich passed away on August 27, 2026 at his home in Arlington Heights at the age of 92. Tom was born in Hamilton, Ohio on July 18, 1934 and was the oldest of 4 children born to his parents, Elizabeth and Clyde Rich. He married his college sweetheart, Jean, after they both graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1955, where he earned his bachelor's degree in history.
After graduating, he worked multiple jobs to support his family while continuing his education, ultimately earning a master's degree from Loyola University of Chicago and his PhD in Education from Northern Illinois University in 1973. Over the years, he served as principal and superintendent for multiple school districts in the suburban Chicago area, including River Groves and River Trails, until he retired in 1994. He was even called out of retirement several times to serve as an interim superintendent at Glenview and Benjamin School Districts. He remained deeply committed to education throughout his life.
Tom was known for his wonderful storytelling, and you could always count on him for a good joke. He loved playing games with his grandchildren, who have many fond memories of their magical adventures. He was kind to everyone and cared deeply about other people. He enjoyed swimming, playing golf, studying history and spending time with his beloved Jean, to whom he was married for nearly 70 years before she passed in April of this year. He never wanted to be parted from her, so we are grateful that they are together again.
He is survived by his two sons, Thomas C. Rich & Timothy (Judy) Rich; grandchildren Michelle (Aaron Chappell) Rich, Kristin (Scott) Talaga, Thomas C. (Jana) Rich, Jr., Caitlin Rich, Jordan (Dan West) Rich, six great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
