Walter was born June 22, 1935 in Lake Geneva, WI to Lauretta M. and Walter E. Nohelty. Walter held various jobs at and around the lake and worked as the race boat starter in the summers. He met his sweetheart, Elizabeth “Bette” Nichols while attending Lake Geneva High School.
After graduating high school in 1953, he attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, graduating in the class of 1957, with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. Walter and Bette married in February 1957, and he began his 23 year long career in Commercial Lending in the Credit Division at the City National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago. He culminated his banking career as Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending at Bank Leumi in Chicago, retiring from the profession in 1980. Some of his favorite baseball teams include the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals. Among professional football teams, the Green Bay Packers were above the rest. He never missed watching the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, the annual running of the Indianapolis 500 cheering for his favorite driver, A.J. Foyt.
He loved taking his family on annual summer vacations. Among some of his favorite destinations were his alma mater, Alumni Family Hall at Notre Dame, his home town Lake Geneva and numerous resorts in Wisconsin.
He was very proud of each of his 10 grandchildren and enjoyed attending their wide ranging activities from musical concerts, soccer games, sporting events, and robotics competitions to milestone achievements of Eagle Scouts and graduation ceremonies.
