Bernice was born on December 4, 1929, in Emory, Texas. She was wife and best friend to Raymond Farmer, her husband of 65 years, mother to Sherry Farmer Baker, Randall Keith Farmer, and Philip Ray Farmer, daughter of Ardean and Tanzlear Hughey, and sister to Ardean Jr., Joe Tom Hughey, Faye Holder, Robert Hughey, and Sharon Mitchell.
Bernice was determined to make a great life for herself. Shortly after she graduated from Emory High School at age 17, she headed to Dallas with a black skirt and a white blouse in hand to work for Community Chest, a charity organization. It was shortly after her move to Dallas that she met Ray Farmer, a World War II veteran and the love of her life. The two moved to Wichita Falls, where their daughter and first son was born, and then back to Dallas where they remained for the next 60 years.
Bernice had a passion for real estate. As a real estate broker, she loved having her own business. She always said her favorite part of the process was helping people find their home. She served as the President of the Dallas Women’s Council of Realtors and maintained her real estate license for six decades.
Bernice was a believer in the Christian faith, regularly attending services and continuing as a committed witness of her faith until her last days. A life-long learner and fiercely independent, Bernice believed in the value of education and made learning a priority. She never met anyone who wasn’t soon her friend. She was social and loved to be around people — and people loved her. She had a keen sense of humor and a positive and kind spirit. Chances are, if you called, she answered. After all, she said she was just lollygagging.
Bernice is survived by two children, Sherry Farmer Baker and Philip Ray Farmer; three children-in-laws: Thomas Baker, Jamie Farmer, and Carree Farmer; 11 grand children: Ryan Farmer, Ashley Saunders, Chrystie Schultz, Melissa Graves, Jonathan Hill, Emily Baker, Luke Farmer, Erica Garza, Kendall Garza, Colton Farmer, and Jackson Farmer; as well as, seven great-grandchildren: Tanner Schultz, Troy Graves, Tucker Schultz, Williams Saunders, Landrey Graves, Lauren Saunders, and Kaylin Hill. Bernice joined her husband Ray and her son Randy in heaven.
You could see the Lord had His hand on her in a special way, because she honored Him. She is having a great homecoming!
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:3
