Retired Army Veteran David Lee Hughes, 79, of Arlington, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 4th. He was born on June 24, 1947, to Elias John Hughes and Mary Jane Hummel in Long Beach, California, and was preceded in death by both parents.
As a young boy, David’s father—playfully known as “Poppy”—traveled the world with his wife, “Nana,” and their children as a military veteran himself, teaching David the discipline, respect, and pride he would carry throughout his entire life.
On November 16, 1968, David married his precious wife, Tishey Batts, and they were blessed to spend over 57 years making unforgettable memories together while raising two children of strong faith and character. Although David’s military career strengthened his resilience and grit, his family brought out his softness and compassion.
David dedicated more than 20 years of service as a proud member of the United States Army National Guard and retired in 2004 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4, only after a devastating stroke cut his career short. Despite this setback, David persevered and relentlessly worked to regain his speech and motor functions.
David, a most honorable and proud man, could not pass by a fellow Veteran without offering a salute to thank them for their service. He knew no strangers and welcomed everyone with a contagious smile.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Tishey; his son, Jeremy Hughes (wife, Emily) of Paris, Texas; and his daughter, Jamie Hughes (partner, Michelle) of Arlington, Texas. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Tanner Hughes (wife, Shelby) of Pattonville, Texas; Trinity Hughes (partner, Mason) of Paris, Texas; and Summer Roberts (husband, Aaron) of Powderly, Texas; as well as four great-grandchildren: Bekham, Emily, Kate, and Koe. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kayla Hughes.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, September 19, at 2:00 p.m. at Moore Bowen Road Funeral Home, 4216 S. Bowen Rd., Arlington, TX 76016. A private burial will be held at a later date.
