Born on October 25, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, Jim was the son of Jack and Martha (née Hausman) Alexander. His early years were spent in Hermosa Beach, California, where he attended elementary and junior high school, before his family relocated to Texas. He was a proud graduate of Garland High School, Class of 1966.
Following high school, Jim attended East Texas State University before honorably serving his country on active duty with the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972. After his military service, Jim built a long and dedicated career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 2008 with over 35 years of accredited service.
Jim was an exceptional athlete who excelled in baseball, basketball, and golf (recording four holes-in-one), and he was known by many as a fantastic bowler. His love for sports extended far beyond playing; he was an avid fan of college and professional sports and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of sports trivia. Jim was equally passionate about music, particularly the sounds of the 1960s. He was the ultimate partner for "Name That Tune" or any music trivia challenge, always ready with a quick answer and a smile.
He is survived by his devoted sister, Nancy Alexander; brother, Gary Alexander (Jean Anton); uncle, Carl Alexander (Mary Beth); cousin, Gretchen Parrish; stepson, Roger Bowman (Sara) and step-grandchildren, Ian, Alex, and Evan; stepsister, Paula Martin and step-nephews, Blake and Brent. He also leaves behind a wide circle of friends and his beloved, loyal furry companion, Allie.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Martha Alexander; stepfather, Delmas (Dale) Pulley; uncles, James Alexander and Charles Alexander; maternal grandparents, Mary Weaver and Henry Hausman; paternal grandfather, Carl V. Alexander; and paternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Fran and Harry Dugan.
