She attended Northwestern University and Denison University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Arts. After graduation, she decided that a BIG change of scenery was needed. Judy moved to Austin and began working as an elementary school teacher. In her search for an apartment, she knocked on the door of the maintenance guy. Low and behold, the door was answered by a good looking Texan wearing glasses and peeling a potato. This guy was none other than G. Lynn Smith!
After marrying in Elgin, Illinois, the couple settled into married life in Austin. After Lynn’s graduation from law school, they decided to move to Dallas. She began teaching again which she loved. Some years later, she and Lynn decided that it was time to start a family. Once expecting, Judy retired to be a stay at home Mom. Their son, Todd Alan Smith was born in 1970 but wasn’t meant for this world. Instead, he became an angel. After such a heartbreaking loss, Judy and Lynn opted to have a family in a different way. They decided to adopt and soon after became parents to Wendy Lynn (Smith) McAleer and Jennifer Lynn (Smith) Workman.
Judy enjoyed motherhood and was an incredible “Room Mom,” Brownie troop leader and PTA participant for both girls. She also enjoyed volunteering with many charitable organizations. She was a proud member of Northwood Women’s Club and was known as the ULTIMATE centerpiece queen. Some of her pieces were sold as auction items and were big sellers.
Judy had many hobbies and interests throughout her life. One of her favorites was travel. She and many friends visited many museums, restaurants, and historical places around the world. She and Lynn also loved to spend time with their friends and host parties. They were both social butterflies.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, G. Lynn Smith; her parents, Fletcher and Dorothy Lamphere; siblings James, Jane, and Linda Lamphere and her son Todd Alan Smith.
She is survived by children Jennifer Smith Workman and husband Tim, Wendy McAleer, and “sort of” son, Devon Bass and wife Nicole; grandchildren Conor McAleer, Keegan McAleer, Austin Bass and Casey Bass.
