

Walter was born in Peoria, Illinois to Walter Sr. and Lee Harbers. Walter graduated in 1947 from Woodruff High School in Peoria, Illinois. He joined the US Air Force in 1950 and was a Technical Instructor at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He received his electrical engineering degree from SMU in May 1960. Walter married Freida Ann Golden in July 1960.
Walter worked for the Western Company of North America for 26 years as a Project Manager. After retirement from the Western Company he worked for H&R Block for 15 years. Initially as a courier, and once the internet took over that job, as a receptionist.
Walter’s life could be described in three words: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. He raced Porsches during the late 50s in Wichita Falls. He has always had a love affair with cars until his last days. Since the 70s, Walter loved building and flying remote control airplanes. He was an active member of the Golden Triangle Remote Control Club up until four years ago. He was also active member of the General H. Walker Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association – 215.
Walter enjoyed his friends and family and was loved by many. Walter never met a stranger. Walter would greet everybody with “Top of the Morning”, “What’s Going On”, “Greetings”, or in his neighborhood, “Hi Neighbor.”
Walter was a member of Tate Springs Baptist Church. Walter is preceded in death by his loving wife, Ann Harbers, and his daughter, Deborah Harbers Walker and her husband, Tommy Walker.
He is survived by his sons, Walter Harbers III, and wife, Lisa; Ray Harbers, and wife Susan; Steve Harbers, and wife Chris; daughter Rene Harbers Thompson, and husband Eddie. Grandchildren: Bryan Puryear; Paul Walker; Alicia Walker; James Harbers, and wife Joanna; Christopher Harbers; Christina Toupin; Ashley Harbers Chun, and husband, Alex; Katie Tracy, and husband Matt; Courtney Thompson; Nathan Thompson and numerous great grandchildren.
