Alphonse Paul Coury

Alphonse,”Al”, was born on February 28, 1928 in Lawrence, MA to immigrant Lebanese parents Assad and Mary Coury. After high school graduation, Al followed his older siblings and joined the Army where he proudly served during WWII in Japan with the Army of Occupation.

Subsequent to discharge and a few years back to the hometown to assist the family, Al relocated to Arlington, VA and began his 40+ year career with the Federal Government. He worked as a supervisor for FHA and HUD. While working, he attended George Washington University evening sessions and graduated with a degree in Accounting. In 1957, Al and his family moved to Vienna, VA where all of his children were raised. Becoming a divorcee in the early seventies, Al joined Parents without Partners and was quickly appointed an Amigo. He enjoyed the organization for many years and met a life-long friend, Mary Watts. Al was also an active member in St Leo Catholic Church in Fairfax, VA. His life time passions were dancing, especially Disco, watching TV, listening to National Public Radio and any other radio talk show

In his last years, Al moved to the Jefferson Sunrise Senior Community in Arlington, VA where he spent his time playing poker, dancing, maintaining his interest in current events and political awareness and just plain enjoying life. He leaves behind many friends there.

Al was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings: Mary Coury Adams, Olga Coury Makrecky, Helen Coury Wesela, Lenda Coury, Frank Coury and Sam Coury.

He is survived by his five children: Sheryl Coury (David Hurley) of Juno Beach, FL, Paul Coury (Pamela) of Centreville, VA, Patricia.Hill (Leslie) of Gainesville, VA, Joanie Sandgren (Alan) of Nokesville, VA, Jeanie Beale (George) of Bristow, VA, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Home 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22203 on February 20, 2018 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on February 21, 2018 at 11:00 am at St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Arlington, VA with interment to follow at 2:00 pm Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas, VA.
