Avigail Asaka, age 78, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at her home in Arlington, VA with her husband by her side. Born in Omaha, NE to Waldo and Eleodora Salado, Avie was the youngest daughter of 8 children. She married Dennis Asaka in May 1960 and had five children between 1961 and 1965. Avie and Dennis would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on May 13, 2019.
She was an amazing mother and homemaker, worked as a Teacher’s Aide in Newport News Public Schools, and after her children were grown, obtained her A.A. cum laude from Northern Virginia Community College while working in Human Resources for Northrop Grumman retiring in 2009. Her retirement was short lived when she returned to work as a crossing guard for Long Branch Elementary School in 2010. She loved seeing her kids every morning and afternoon and keeping them safe until her illness required her to retire in January 2018.
Avie will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving, humble, and selfless wife and mother who always put others first. She is survived by her husband Dennis, her children Leslie, Cori Pratel (Stephen), Dennis Jr., Christopher (Michelle), and Timi, her grandson Daniel Jimenez, step grandchildren Dominique (Christian) and great-grandson, Christos Masters, Michelina, and Stephen, Jr, her sisters Hilda Luke and Ophelia Kantzian (Steve), brother Joey Salado (Dorothy), and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
A memorial service will be held at Cherrydale Baptist Church, 3910 Lorcom Lane, Arlington, VA 22207 at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2019 followed by a reception at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Avie’s name to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) Foundation, Inc.
