Barbara Ehrlich was born in the Washington DC area on November 29th,1943 to Phil and Mary Young. The eldest of two siblings, she grew up in Arlington, Virginia, attending Washington-Lee High School and going to Ferrum College, earning an associate’s degree at a time when women were not expected to study past secondary school.
After college, Barbara started working at Equitable Insurance, where she rapidly rose to the rank of supervisor, again encountering and defeating sexism by competing with a man for the position and winning.
As she worked, she met her perfect match, John Ehrlich and they were married in 1969. The two went on to have two devoted sons Paul and James Ehrlich She was a kind and supportive mother, active in school gatherings and PTA functions. James still lives in Arlington, while Paul has relocated to Los Angeles.
After Barbara’s children matured, she occupied her time by assuming various assisting roles within the community, including organizing materials in the Arlington County Library system, and aiding doctors at The Arlington Free Clinic. While working in these roles, she made friends throughout the community and influenced many people’s lives for the better.
Barbara had many hobbies, including reading, computers and music. She was always interested in how things worked and loved to chat about people and television.
Barbara Ehrlich passed away on October 3rd 2015 after a fulfilling life. Barbara was surrounded by family and expired in Arlington, where she grew up. Hers was a quiet success, and a long-lasting one.
