Carolyn was born on November 11, 1940 in Weldon, NC, to Mattie Lee Scott and James Arrington Fenner. Carolyn lived in Halifax County with her beloved grandparents, the Rev. Ira David and Madgie Scott, until she and her sister, Pat, moved in 1954 to Washington, DC to live with their mother, Mattie. Carolyn graduated in 1958 from Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
Carolyn enjoyed a fulfilling career in and around the Washington, DC area. She worked for more than 35 years as an administrative assistant in the government affairs office of Mutual of Omaha, where she met many prominent politicians and celebrities. Carolyn retired from the National Institutes of Health.
Carolyn had many passions in life: travel, music, news, movies, fine food, and, of course, family. Her large extended clan was a constant source of support, and she counted many of them as her closest confidantes. As a hard working, divorced mother, Carolyn devoted her life to her only child, Jill, and sought to provide her the best opportunities she could.
Although Carolyn lived with an incurable disease that slowly took away her ability to live an independent life, she fought bravely for as long as she could, and remained curious, engaged and loving until the very end.
In addition to her daughter, grandsons, and sister, Patricia S. Nelson, Carolyn is also survived by sister Cheryl L. Graham (Fenner); brothers Donald J. and Derin J. Fenner; and a host of relatives and friends.
