Catherine A. “Sally” Breeden, 82, of Arlington VA passed away on Wednesday August 14th 2019 at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. Sally was born in Washington DC on Sept 10th 1936. She was the daughter of the late George Carter Sr. and Catherine King and was raised by stepfather John King. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother George Carter Jr., her Daughter Sharon Marie Heider, Sister Betty Snow, Brother in law James Snow and Grandson Jesse Breeden. She is survived by her son Earl Breeden Jr. a granddaughter Nikki Breeden and 2 Grandsons Jake and Colton Breeden and Great Grand Daughter Mackenna Lee Hines, as well as Nephew James Snow Jr. and Niece Sandra Nadeau.
Sally graduated from Western High School in Wash DC. She worked during high school at Woolworths Dime Store in Georgetown as well as part time for the Federal Gov’t. After graduation, the majority of her time was with the Comptroller Office of the Army at the Pentagon where she was affectionately referred to by her associates as “Mother”. Even some of the General Officers referred to her as Mother. Sally handled all clearances for the Director (including Military and Civilian) and attended high level meetings for the director of the comptroller office & general officers too.
After retirement with 40 Years of Service - Sally worked at Culpeper Gardens in the Administrative Office for 10 years doing Accounting and Human Resources. There she helped many other employees apply for their citizenship.
Sally was an active member of the Cathedral of St. Thomas More Catholic Church as well as The Woman’s Club in Arlington VA, and her favorite hobby was being an avid Redskins fan.
She volunteered for Arlington County Meals on Wheels as well as the Joe Gibbs Youth for Tomorrow in Gainesville VA.
Her best friend Nadine loves to tell how Sally was known for her coupons and usually if she didn’t have one she would not make the purchase. “ One time she, Nadine & Vicky her nurse ended up at Bed Bath and Beyond and “Sal” forgot her coupons. I told her if you would’ve mentioned it, I have some in the trunk - Sal said Oh next time Nadine there’s always next time “.
For many years, Sally was a Redskin season ticket holder. She enjoyed going to the games at RFK Stadium and Fed Ex Field and tailgating with her Redskins fans Adine & Nadine Smith and occasionally with her grandson Jesse Breeden. Many great times were spent there with Connie Walter, Katie Brame, Linda Hobbs and Larry Mitchell. Away games we all would go to Tommy & Joan Edwards or Connie’s house.
The family wishes to thank her great friend Mary Alderete (whom Sally affectionately called Daughter because she was like a daughter to her) for taking such wonderful care of our loved one and always being there for her.
Rest in Peace Aunt Sally – you will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving you in this life.
