Cesar Cainelli 1921-2021 Born in Lavis, Italy, in 1921, Cesar Cainelli emigrated to Argentina in 1926 with his parents, Rodolfo Manuel Cainelli and Josefina María Clementina Viglino. Following a lifetime of professional achievements and international travel, he succumbed to a fatal fall at his home in Arlington, Virginia in May 2021, just short of his 100th birthday. He was active all of his life, completing 5 miles on his stationary bike the morning of his fall. Cesar graduated from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata with an MS in Agronomy and Engineering in 1947. In 1960 the US Agency for International Development awarded him a grant to pursue another MS in Agricultural Economics at Iowa State University. His extensive work in the development of Argentine agricultural methods was crowned in 1966 with the very prestigious Gregorio Werthein prize. The Jewish Argentine Institute of Culture and Information recognized him for his work on optimal resource allocation in establishment of the Argentine corn zone. He followed this successful first career by twenty years at the Interamerican Development Bank in Washington, DC where he moved his family in 1967. Cesar was an avid reader with many interests: news, novels, history, politics, medicine and biology, a life long physical fitness buff, a world traveler, and a champion grill master. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends, was always the life of the party and quick with a good joke. Cesar had a life long love of cars, sometimes trading several in one year, enjoying the pursuit. His passion was his family, being a father brought him great joy. To his children and grandchildren “Papi” was brilliant—a master in just about any subject, an expert in fixing anything, and an enthusiastic student of the latest trends and technology. Cesar is survived by his second wife Ivonne. Also surviving “Papi” are his children: Graciela (Jim Sicilian), Dora Dozier (Mike), Cesar A. (Tracy), Ana (Stephen Bates); his grand children: Bryan (Brittany), Cesar Mario Cainelli, Brandon Schwemley (Kaylee), Sara Johansen (Justin); and his great grand children: Wyatt, Grant, and Nora, and Coen Schwemley. He was preceded in death by his first wife Lia Hebe, the mother of his children. Funeral services will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Virginia 22203 Details: Donations in his memory may be sent to: Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center, Attention Mary Jo Krist, 4715 15th Street North, Arlington, VA 22205
