Murphy Funeral Homes

Charlie passed away peacefully at home on December 25, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna, daughters Marianne Haring and Adrienne Harding, and grandchildren Clio Haring, Jeremy Haring, Jessica Harding and Caroline Harding, as well as several nieces and nephews. Charlie was born on March 12, 1929 and was raised in Brooklyn NY. He graduated from Fordham University and took graduate studies at New York University. After college, he joined IBM and later worked for Ford Motor Company. After serving in the Army, including a tour of duty in Korea, he joined O'Toole Associates and then moved into insurance with Home Life Insurance Company and North American Reassurance Company. He moved to Washington DC in 1966 to work at Bankers Security Life Insurance as Administrative Vice President. Charlie was elected President of USLICO Corporation in 1987, CEO in 1988, and became Chairman of the Board in 1990. He retired in 1992. Charlie was an avid sailor for over 45 years. He and Donna spent many happy hours aboard Smart Aleck which they owned for 30 years. He was a member of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake and they enjoyed cruising on the Chesapeake. Membership in the Sailing Club also took them to more distant ports - New England, British Virgin Islands, Croatia and Greece. For many years skiing was a winter recreation for Charlie and Donna, first learning on icy conditions in Pennsylvania and then going farther afield in Utah and Colorado. Golf was a big part of retirement. As a member of Washington Golf and Country Club since 1992, Charlie found many golfing buddies through the WAGS. The love of golf also led to many years of 1-2 month winter trips to Naples, Florida. Charlie had a long and active life, was successful in his career, and was devoted to his family. He was a member of St. John the Beloved in McLean and his strong Catholic faith carried him through the difficult time he had at the end. The family will be receiving friends on Sunday, December 29, 2019 from 2 to 5 PM at Murphy Funeral Homes, 4510 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington. A mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, December 30, 2019 11 AM at St. John the Beloved, 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean, VA.
