
Hoppe was born and raised in Rocky River, Ohio. He graduated from Purdue University and later obtained an MBA from Harvard University. A lifelong train enthusiast, Hoppe worked in the railroad industry throughout his long career. In the 1970s, Hoppe worked for the United States Railway Association on the formation of Conrail from numerous bankrupt private freight railroads. From 1990-1994, he served as president of the Long Island Railroad in New York. He also worked as a consultant specializing in both freight and passenger rail for Booze Allen & Hamilton where he became a senior partner.
He was married to Elizabeth (Libby) Hoppe for 37 years until her death in 2005. The couple were avid travelers who enjoyed touring the world together.
Hoppe is survived by his son Charles Hoppe Jr. of Arlington, daughter-in-law Jennifer M Hoppe, granddaughters Caroline (8) and Lila (4), and his brother, Herbert J. Hoppe of Rocky River, OH, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held at St Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington Va. on Friday, January 15th at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library.
