JUDGE DANIEL JAMES DINAN Of Arlington, Virginia passed away peacefully on December 22, 2015 at Virginia Hospital Center after a short illness. Born in New Haven, Connecticut on March 21, 1929, he was the son of the late Matthew and Helen Dinan. He attended Fairfield University where he received a B.S.S. in History in 1952. He was then in the United States Marine Corps. He received his LL.B. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1960. He served as a trial attorney with the Tax Division of the Department of Justice from 1961 to 1970, and was an Assistant Chief of the Civil Trial Section of the Department of Justice Tax Division from 1970 to 1979. He also taught trial practice and techniques, evidence, and civil procedure at the Attorney General’s Advocacy Institute from 1977 to 1979. He was appointed as a Special Trial Judge on the United States Tax Court on February 4, 1979. He retired from the Court on August 3, 2003. He was preceded in death by his sister Anna Jean Peters. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Patricia Brainard Dinan; his sons Kevin Dinan and James Dinan; his daughters-in-law Christen Dinan and Monica Dinan; his grandchildren Matthew Dinan, Kaitlin Dinan Kimball, Stephanie Dinan, Casey Dinan, and Tyler Dinan; and his brothers Edward Dinan and Robert Dinan. Other than his family, his greatest joy was spending time at his second home in Vermont. There will be a memorial visitation on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Murphy’s Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22203. A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 5300 North 10th Street, Arlington, Virginia 22205. Interment will be private.
