Obituary of Earl E. Shaffer

IN THE CARE OF

Murphy Funeral Homes

Peacefully passed away on November 25, 2013. Born in Shinnston, West Virginia on June 5, 1926, he was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Shaffer and his brother, Frank Shaffer, Jr. of Porterville, California. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rosemary "Betty" Shaffer; brother, Melvin C. Shaffer of Marana, Arizona; son, Earl E. Shaffer Jr. and spouse, Ellen of Midlothian, Virginia; daughter, Susan S. Niebergall and spouse, Timothy of Vienna, Virginia; and grandchildren, Dr. Katherine Shaffer, Jeffrey Shaffer, Megan Shaffer and Michael Niebergall. After serving in the United States Navy from 1944-1946, he graduated from Potomac State College of West Virginia University in 1948 and then graduated from the George Washington University Law School in 1951. His distinguished legal career spanned over 60 years and included being the acting Commonwealth Attorney of Arlington County and as a substitute judge for over 40 years, making him one of the few to ever serve as attorney, prosecutor, and judge. On a humorous side, his distinctive law office in Arlington is noted for, amongst other things, a large collection of ceramic, stuffed, and plastic pigs. The family will receive visitors at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA on Saturday, November 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Arlington Bar Association or a charity of your choice . - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/washingtonpost/obituary.aspx?n=earl-e-shaffer&pid=168203994&fhid=3060#sthash.tq33vyOS.dpuf
