Edna P. Cope

She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on August 23, 1911, but spent most of her childhood in Winston-Salem, NC, where her mother ran a boarding house. She came to Washington, DC, in the early 30’s where she found a job as a cashier at the S & W cafeteria. There she met, and subsequently married, her husband of more than 52 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, and later the First Presbyterian Church in Arlington, VA, where she taught children’s Sunday School. Since moving to western Fairfax, she has attended Little River Baptist Church in Aldie, VA.

She was a homemaker, a wonderful cook, and seamstress, doing exquisite crocheting, knitting, and needlepoint. She taught cake decorating for the Arlington County Home Demonstration Agency and was widely known for her beautiful doll cakes and wedding cakes. Her family and friends also remember her delicious cream puffs.

After her children were grown, she enjoyed traveling to Europe, Hawaii, Canada, and throughout the continental United States.

She is survived by a daughter, Eugenia Cope; a son, Edwin M. Cope, Jr. (Gail); one granddaughter, Stephanie Alice Cope, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin M. Cope, Sr.; two sisters, Minnie Patterson Tyrrell and Alma Patterson Dale; and one brother, Eugene (Pat) Patterson.

Mrs. Cope’s Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Arlington Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA, 22003. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. A visitation will be held prior to the Service from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Interment will be at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22201.
