With heavy hearts, Liz’s family announces her passing on March 3rd, 2025 at the age of 91. Liz will be lovingly remembered by her son David (Maria); her grandchildren Leila, Diego, and Lucia; her sisters-in-law, Marge Gee and Amy Ellsworth; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and family friends. Liz is predeceased by her beloved husband, Carl Greene; her brother Roger Daly; and her three sisters: Alice Avery, Renee Daly, and Terry Daly.
Liz was born in Long Island, NY and lived much of her early life in New York and New Jersey. As the youngest of five, Liz learned early to fend for herself and kept that mantra for the rest of her life. Yet, she was called upon to care for and support her family many times over the years. Her sister Renee was diagnosed with polio at age 4 and would be in a wheelchair for most of her life; Liz and her family spent the next fifty years selflessly supporting Renee. Liz’s sister Terry, whom she was closest to from an early age, was suddenly diagnosed with cancer and passed away at the young age of 27. These tragedies and Liz’s unselfish response would be a hallmark of her life.
In her 20’s and 30’s, Liz balanced her family’s needs with her independent spirit. She traveled to the West Coast and spent time in Europe as well. Eventually, she landed back in the New York area where she reconnected with family, worked as a legal secretary in Manhattan, and found time to meet and marry Carl. Together, they toured the nation as Carl’s naval duties took them through Florida, California, and eventually landed them in Virginia Beach, Virginia where they raised their son David and lived most of their remaining lives.
The “loves” of Liz’s life certainly comprised many beloved pets over the years – dogs and cats including Mun-Mun, Andy, Wahoo and TJ. Liz was also a voracious reader, an absolutely amazing cook and had an incredibly sharp wit. She truly adored her three grandchildren and greatly enjoyed sharing stories and pictures of them. One of Liz’s favorite places was the family cottage in Maine where she enjoyed a cup of coffee at sunrise watching the seals bask in the sun.
To be sure, Elizabeth Greene was a force to be reckoned with. A recent letter from a family friend describes Liz best: “You were such a trail blazer and pioneer for your time. You were the first independent modern woman I had ever met. You were fearless, there was nothing you couldn’t do”. We feel blessed that Liz is finally at peace; we will carry her memory and her spirit in our hearts forever.
Memorial services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
