Larry was born in Malden, Massachusetts on June 12, 1940, son of Francis and Madeline McGinn. He grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, graduated from Boston College High School in 1959, and attended Virginia Tech before joining the Army (he later graduated from the University of the State of New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1976). Larry was in the Army for 20 years, including assignments in Viet Nam, Korea, England, and Germany. Larry married his wife Gail in Rochester, New York on November 8, 1975. After retiring from the Army he continued to serve his country until his final retirement from federal service in 2003. He was very proud of his service to his country.
Larry was preceded in death by his sister Delia, and is survived by his brother Paul McGinn and his brother John McGinn with his wife Carol, their son Brian McGinn and his wife Katie, and their three children Aubrie, Thomas, and Autumn Delia . Larry had numerous cousins and other relatives, and valued this extensive family.
He was beloved by his family extended by marriage: his sister-in-law Kathy Johncox, her husband Tom (deceased) and her son Steven Johncox with his wife Laura and children Aidan and Scarlet; and his brother-in-law Jim Herman with his spouse Susan, and their children Jamie, Katherine Herman MD and her husband David Bruestle. Larry loved Thanksgiving and routinely hosted the annual family dinner, where it was not unusual to find a turkey close to 30 pounds in the oven.
Larry loved music. He was an accomplished piano player (self-taught) with a specialty in Ragtime. He loved to cook, and even arranged a special McGinn cooking school experience for his nephew Jamie. He liked wine, a fine bourbon, reading, and his cats. He held his friends near to his heart and cherished the times they could talk or be together. He dearly loved his wife Gail, and was ever grateful for the amazing life they spent together through their 47 years of marriage. Gail attended and graduated from William Smith College in Geneva, New York, and Larry always had a special place in his heart for the College, and for her college friends who adopted him as one of their own.
There will be a Visitation on August 26 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. Larry’s love of music will be reflected in his Celebration of Life with Music to be held on August 27th, at 11:00 AM. Both events will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Arlington Blvd., Arlington VA 22203. The burial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on October 19, 2022 at 1:00 PM..
