In Memory of Gail Mary Bennett September 22, 1944- September 8, 2017

Gail Bennett of Arlington, Virginia, passed away after a short illness, on Friday, September 8, 2017. Born in New York City, the eldest daughter of Colonel James Gordon Bennett, Retired U.S. Army and Dorothy Ann Burden, she spent her childhood growing up in the Orient, Canada and the United States. Gail graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s College in Los Angeles, California followed by working in the publishing field in New York City. She then moved to Washington, DC and recently celebrated her 30th year as the Executive Assistant to the Regional Vice Presidents and General Managers during her years at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown. Throughout her career, she touched thousands of lives through her kindness, generosity and caring. Gail was relied upon day in and day out by those with whom she worked. In the most discreet and subtle way she guided and helped many of the now prominent Four Seasons Managers and staff toward their success. Gail’s keen intellect, memory and savvy, her breadth and depth of knowledge of people and her vast network of friends and colleagues around the world are legendary. She had the most elegant touch with her writing and always chose the perfect gifts and amenities for friends and guests. To know Gail, is to have been blessed by her love of beauty and elegance in dress and style and to have shared many laughs and stories. She delighted in giggling over the everyday human foibles and sharing great food and wine. She could discuss the latest win or loss of practically every sports team and knew the important players. She was passionate about the theatre, films, opera, visual arts, travel and literature. Gail was an institution, an inspiration and beloved friend and colleague. She will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her sister, Eileen Bennett of Arlington, Virginia. Friends and colleagues will be welcomed at a Memorial Gathering at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA on Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 2:00pm-5:00pm.

Only found out today ON HER BIRTHDAY that my dear Gail, friend of many many years had died. Like often happens when you move away your contact isn't as often. I phoned her home this morning to play my usual badly piano-played Happy Birthday to her answering machine. Then thinking she may be at work called and got the sad and shocking news. Gail was an always loving and bright spot in my life...we worked together for years and she never once forgot my birthday in the nearly 30 years we were friends. We had spoken recently and I was planning a trip for the fall to see her.....how I will miss that laugh, so unique, so full of joy. When I worked in the Four Seasons Executive Office "basement" with her you always knew she was around long before you saw her....that laugh that laugh that wonderful one of a kind laugh and that sly twinkle of the eye....I forever now will close my eyes and still hear it lifting my spirits. I love you Gail, my sympathy goes to Eileen and Family and all those that will have an empty spot in their heart that she so richly filled. In the hearts and minds of those that love us we live forever and in that way Gail will never leave us.
With Love Always.....Stephen

I am so sad to learn of Gail's passing. I knew Gail through Gail's brother, Jim, who is married to my sister, Carolyn Grega Bennett. Jim has told me many sweet stories about the Bennett family adventures when living on army bases around the World. What an interesting and intellectually stimulating childhood they had. He said Gail was always the smartest in every school-valedictorian too. A hard act to follow for younger brother. She will be missed.

I have been blessed with Gail's friendship for years and don't know how I'll manage without being able to call and speak with her. But every day I see something that shows me her style, courage, class and taste ! I will miss her terribly.

During my years supporting Hans Willimann at Four Seasons Chicago, I spoke very often with Gail on the phone who always had a great story to share and much wisdom about support of the GM's office. I last saw her in 2009 while visiting DC and we had a wonderful dinner together. She was one of the kindest people I have ever met and will be dearly missed by all. God bless you Gail!
