

LTC (Ret) George “Lee” Maxwell of Arlington Virginia passed away on April 7, 2014 in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on June 12, 1925 the son of George Harrison Maxwell and Lida Grace Maxwell. Lee married Rachael Patricia Wampler on August 27, 1949, who precedes him in death.
Lee enlisted in the Army 1943 as an Infantry Solider where he served 225th Infantry Regiment, 64th Infantry Division. Lee fought heroically in the Battle of the Bulge where he earned a Battle Field commission to 2nd Lieutenant and a Purple Heart.
Upon his discharge Lee graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southwest Missouri State. He was a graduate student at the University of Missouri when he returned to active duty in 1951 as a 1st Lieutenant. Throughout his career, Lee served in California, Japan, Germany, Maryland and Korea. He ended his Military career commanding the 710MI BDE in Hawaii. His numerous awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal. After his retirement he went on to become a Special Agent for the Department of Defense.
Lee is survived by his children Roger Maxwell (Kathy Maxwell) and Rebecca Maxwell (James Strock), 7 grandchildren, Rachael Maxwell (Kelly Malo), Derick Sizemore, Fletcher Maxwell, Hannah Robbins (Jesse Robbins), William Sizemore (Shianne Sizemore), Natalie Prye, and Katelyn Maxwell and one great granddaughter, Emma Brooke Sizemore. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
All are invited to attend the service, which will be held at the Old Chapel at Fort Myer Post on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 9:00 am with the Rev Shelby Ochs Owen officiating. Interment Arlington National Cemetery immediately following the service. Family and friends are invited to join the family in honoring Lee’s great life immediately after the service at Ballston Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Lee via the National Stroke Association.
