OBITUARY

Gladys V. Powell

June 21, 1930June 22, 2020

Gladys V. Powell of Dumfries, VA, formally of Arlington, VA, transitioned on June 22, 2020 after a short illness. Gladys was born on June 21, 1930, in Elmington, VA, to Archie and Mildred Powell. She was third of eight children. Gladys attended school in Elmington, VA, and graduated from Nelson County High School in 1949.

Gladys moved to Arlington, VA, in the early 50’s. She married Arthur V. Powell on March 29, 1954, who preceded her in death. From that union there were four children: Gregory K. Powell of Alexandria, VA, Cheryl C. Powell of Dumfries, VA, Valerie Powell-Jones (Anthony) of Meridianville, AL, and Aprel P. Powell of Dumfries, VA. She had four grandchildren, and leaves behind three siblings: Hazel A. Page, Walter Powell, and Billy Powell, two sister-in-laws, goddaughter Althea Brum, and a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Gladys worked passionately in her community and was active in her childrens’ PTA, as well as volunteering at their school. She was an active member of Saint John’s Baptist Church in Arlington, VA, until her health began to fail. Our mother loved sharing good times with family and friends and was a woman of simple needs.

We will miss you mom, and will hold a special place in our hearts for you. Love, your children.
