Originally from Bogota, New Jersey, Hazel was a graduate of the College of William and Mary and received her masters from the University of Virginia. Hazel worked as a math teacher at Langley High School in McLean, VA and was loved by her students who often referred to her as “mom” and stayed in touch with her through the years.
After she retired from teaching, Hazel went on to tutor students of all ages and backgrounds throughout the Northern Virginia area for over 18 years. As a tutor, she not only taught a full spectrum of school subjects but provided insights on life, living, and caring for others. She will be deeply missed by her students and their families.
In her spare time Hazel traveled the world with friends, worked as a volunteer with the Smithsonian Institute, and was an avid reader who continually sought to learn, experience, and share new and innovative ideas she came across.
Hazel was a loving mother raising three sons and was always there to support her children and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents William and Catherine Hisgrove, sister Heather, and son Chris. She is survived by her sons Mark and Jim Orth.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Heart Association or Smithsonian Institution Smithsonian in her name.
A private service will take place at Columbia Gardens.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared below for the Orth Family.
