Herm was a seminal influence on my life, one of three or four.  He was my Tactical Officer in class 10-67, and he made my life miserable for 23 weeks.  However, I never forgot the lessons I learned, nor the examples he set during that time.  Thankfully, I was able to reconnect with him in 1996, and we became friends after that.  I visited with him last year at his home in AZ,and he and Evonne were most gracious in hosting us.  Thank you Herm, for being a great mentor, leader, influence, host, and friend.

Herman was a great soldier, TAC Officer and man. Tough but  fair and always had a lesson tied to what he asked of you. He was the soldier you would want on your side.

He used his experience in Vietnam to teach valuable lessons to his candidates. I kept one piece of advice he gave me in mind every day .

"Dwyer,

Make no mistake, the NCO's run this Army. If you do not accord them the respect and credit they deserve, you  will have a very tough time" Sage advice that helped me immeasurably during my service and beyond in business.  

I had made a bad decision and had a weekend pass cancelled. Herman "asked" me if I wanted to baby sit his daughter. When I got to his house he introduced me to his wife and daughter. Before he left, he opened the refrigerator, pointed to a 6 pack of beer and said it better be gone when we get back !!

My sincere condolences to Herman's entire family for their loss. He set the bar high for himself and we all benefited from it.

Herm was a great brother-in-law and we are very proud of his many accomplishments.  While proudly serving his country and making many sacrifices, he was also able to help raise a wonderful and loving family for whom we reserve a special love.  You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Herman was my OCS classmate (17-66).  He always set the standard and led the way.  A great soldier.  RIP.  God bless his family.

We all looked up to Herman, this tough Green Beret-Airborne solider.  We were in aw and a little afraid of him.  But he was fair and genuine and made officers out of us all-OCS class 10-67.

Herman was my best buddy in the Delta Force and Sierra Nevada Corp. He was the best Soldier that I had the pleasure of working with and truly a brother to me.  I will dearly miss him.  Although Herman is gone I will live in the memories of all the great time we had together. My love goes out to all the family..

RIP Herman- You were my TAC Officer in OCS class 10-67. It was probably one of the toughest six months of my life. All of the candidates looked up to and respected you. You were tough but fair. Another TAC Officer took a real dislike to me and made a concerted effort to drum me out. You saw something in me that maybe i didn't at that time so you intervened and I stuck it out. Herman Adams was a splendid tactical officer and a fine man.  He was an example to all of us green kids who were preparing to go to Nam.  He had been there and knew what he was about in training us to face any eventuality.  In the process he gave us skills for life that would stand us in good stead.

It was my pleasure to catch up with him later in life at our OCS reunions and connect more as equals.  That was strange indeed.  He was gracious, humble, kind and engaging.  It was my and our colleagues great pleasure to have known him and have him in our lives in such a meaningful way.  May God bless and keep him and his family.

Although our paths never crossed after OCS (until the 2011 Reunion in DC), Herman was, and will be, a major influence in my life.  He was my vision of a soldier, a patriot, and what America stands for.  I knew Herman for 23 weeks, and those memories have lasted a lifetime.  Thank you, Herman, for making me a better man.

It is difficult to put into words the sense of loss we feel.  We were friends for fifty years..we felt like family.  RIP dearest friend.  Our love and prayers go out to all of you.
