On June 27, 1953, Jack was born with Down’s syndrome in Afragola, Italy, at a time when that was considered a totally disabling condition. He proved that perception wrong by living a full and happy life with his parents, Brig. Gen. Jack E. Babcock (USA retired) and Judith Mary Babcock, and his four sisters Jill Babcock Kern of Arlington, VA, Carol Anne Babcock Bales of Wilmington, NC, Maria Babcock Clements (who died in 1991), and Alice Kay Babcock Monet of Arlington, VA and Flagstaff, AZ. With his family, Jack lived in Italy, France and Belgium. He worked for seventeen years at the L&N Seafood Grill in Pentagon City in Arlington, preparing salads, pasta, shrimp and other dishes. He enjoyed participating in Special Olympics, art classes and a social club in Alexandria, VA. After his mother’s death in 2006, he lived for two years at Rainbow Acres Ranch in Camp Verde, AZ, where he enjoyed the desert climate and many activities, along with kind and loving friends and caregivers. He died on April 7, 2010 after a brief illness. He will be very much missed by his father, sisters, many nieces, nephews and a host of friends and caregivers.
