Jaqueline Claire Cartmell March 3, 1994 – August 10, 2020 Jaqueline (Jacky) Cartmell, 26, of Arlington passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on August 10, 2020. Her parents were Janey Brauninger and Don Cartmell. She was born in Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil on March 3, 1994. Jacky attended Nottingham Elementary School, Williamsburg Middle School, and was a member of the 2012 graduating class of Washington-Lee High School. She later attended Northern Virginia Community College. She was a kind and caring person who looked after and encouraged those around her. She went as a volunteer to the Mississippi coast to rebuild houses damaged by Hurricane Katrina. She was also talented and demonstrative, having played Huck Finn for the St. Andrews Players and one of hot box girls in Williamsburg Middle School musical Guys & Dolls. She was also a Girl Scout and participated in the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute (BACI) Culture classes including Portuguese and capoeira training. Jacky also had a special place in her heart for small animals she had many pets over the years and worked at Wild Birds Unlimited, McLean Animal Hospital and Banfield Animal Hospital. On a middle school science trip to Costa Rica she took a special interest in the frogs and butterflies and kept a nature journal. Jacky was always industrious and resourceful. She worked as a host at Dogfish Head Alehouse until the pandemic forced the dining room to close. During the pandemic she return to her previous job at Ayers Hardware. She loved writing, travelling and photographing nature. In Oregon, she camped and canoed with her father and her sister Jessica. She was the only one quick enough to catch a fish with her hands! She spent some family vacations in Oregon, on the Outer Banks and at Deep Creek Lake. She made a memorable trip to SeaWorld in Florida with her Dad and, most recently, enjoyed a much-needed beach trip with her cousin Katie. She was also athletic. In elementary school she represented Nottingham in the Arlington County Fitness Championship. She was a member of numerous Arlington NW Lions Soccer teams and Arlington recreational league basketball teams (winning one championship). She was also a member of Overlee Pool.

All these interests made Jacky a fascinating person who had many friends, was a great conversationalist and was a beam of sunshine in any group. Jacky is survived by her parents, Janey Brauninger and Don Cartmell; her brothers, Edson and Tommy and her sister Jessica, all of Arlington. She is also survived by her boyfriend, Zach Burdette of Arlington and several loving aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Murphy Funeral Homes in Arlington. A family memorial service will be held at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC).
