John was a wonderful and generous member of our community. He volunteered with Arlington Neighborhood Village for many, many years supporting with kindness and compassion older members of our community. John was always available to help someone in need or lend a friendly ear.  He will be much missed.  Our condolences to his family.

Years ago I wrote this haiku for John on his birthday. 

MONARCH
Fiery orange wings
Laced with black – a harbinger 
Of autumn colors

He replied that monarchs were very special to him, and that he had watched a monarch emerge from its chrysalis, dry its wings and eventually fly.

Now it is spring and here is a haiku from the great master, Basho.

April's air stirs in 
Willow-leaves...a butterfly
Floats and balances”

I will miss you, John.

My deepest condolences to John’s family and friends.  I was lucky to meet John in high school and he enriched the lives of many including me.  I’ll always remember his kindness and generosity.
