His passing from the mortal world mirrored his tenure in it. His transition was calm, deliberate, and peaceful -- much like his presence in the lives of those he touched. He dedicated himself wholly and fully to sustaining his family -- materially, emotionally, and spiritually. For years he organized his workweek around being available to drive his son one hour each way to New York City to pursue unsurpassed educational opportunities. He worked long past typical retirement age, deep into his 70s, to continue providing for his family.
His life traced the arc of America in the 20th century. He was born during the Great Depression to a father who had fled his home in Canada at an early age. He was raised during World War II and served in the army during the Korean War. The Montgomery GI Bill afforded him the opportunity to be part of the first generation of his family to attend college and later graduate school. After a successful career at Seiko, Bell Atlantic, and the City Government of New York, he settled into Manhattan and poured himself into improving a weekend house by the shore for his wife to enjoy. He embodied the American dream.
Through ups and downs, there was never a word of complaint. He was relentlessly positive, upbeat, content, life full. This spirit was the ballast in his family's household that prevented the ship from capsizing. His self-sacrifice in maintaining peace and bestowing it on others was saintly. There wasn't a mean bone in his body. His joy, humility, gratitude, and sincerity were infectious even in brief encounters.
It will be impossible to return the service he provided his family, but we will pay it forward. In his last years, his grandchildren were his pride and joy. As his health declined, nothing lit up his world like they did. He would beam from ear to ear for as many hours as they were in his presence, and they took warmly to him, and visibly bare the imprint of his spirit on them.
Visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Homes, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Virginia 22203, on July 14, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:30 pm, followed by a Funeral Ceremony at Murphy Funeral Homes at 10:30 am.
