John Francis O'Neill Jr.

John Francis O'Neill, Jr. of Arlington, VA, died on December 4, 2017. Since 2011, he lived at The Jefferson, an assisted-living residence in Arlington, VA. His family and friends wish to thank the caregivers at the Jefferson for their compassionate care of Mr. O'Neill for many years. A long-time resident of Arlington, he was a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Mr. O'Neill was born on March 13, 1934, in Washington, DC, to the late Catherine Hanagan and John F. O'Neill, Sr. He grew up in the Washington, DC area, graduating from St. Michael's School in Silver Spring, St. Anslem's Priory School, the Catholic University of America, and the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University. For many years, he worked as an a attorney at the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, DC, retiring in 1997. Survivors include several cousins who live in the Washington Metropolitan area; Fredericksburg and Stafford, VA; and Colorado; and many friends who now live throughout the United States. For many years, Mr. O'Neill was active with the Arlington County Republicans, and served on the county's Transportation and Planning Commissions. He was also active in the Ski Club of Washington, including serving as its president. His many interests include skiing, public transportation, country and western music, Rehoboth and Dewey beaches, and Catholic University's baseball, basketball and football programs. He spent summer weekends in Rehoboth from 1970 to 2000. An only child, Mr. O'Neill spent many weekends in Florida looking after his parents, who retired there in the 1950's. Upon the death of his mother, he moved his father into his home in Arlington, VA, and cared for him there until his father's death.
