John J. Roche

Jack was born on November 2, 1941, to William Patrick Roche and Elizabeth “Betty” McDermott Roche. He was raised in the Bronx, New York, and later served his country as a member of the United States Merchant Marine. He went on to build a long career with Military Sealift Command, where he became known as a deeply knowledgeable contracting professional, generous mentor, and exceptional leader. Colleagues remembered him as kind and accepting with a wonderful sense of humor - someone who shared his expertise freely, opened doors for those beginning their careers, and treated everyone with respect.

Jack met his future wife, Nancy Larkin, while they were both volunteering as tutors for underserved young people in Washington, D.C. They married on August 17, 1974, and built a life together in Arlington.

Jack’s interests and accomplishments extended far beyond his professional career. He was a published author, television actor, stand-up comedian, voice-over professional, and lifelong cyclist. In 1997, he was honored by the Institute for the Visually Handicapped for recording more than 500 books for people who were visually impaired, many of which remain in circulation today.

Jack will be remembered not only for the breadth of his accomplishments, but also for his humor, generosity, curiosity, and gift for making room in his life for family, friends, and anyone who needed support or mentorship.

Jack is survived by his wife, Nancy Larkin Roche; his sons, John Daniel Roche (Theresa) and James Larkin Roche (Tiffany); his grandchildren Megan Roche (17), Nicholas Roche (15) and Michelle Roche (4), and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones throughout Ireland and the United States.
