

John was the son of Alfred and Marie Zumwalde and grew up on a farm in Richmond, MN. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joanne Zumwalde. John worked in the White House for 29 years, serving presidents Eisenhower through Reagan, first in the White House Army Signal Agency and then in 1967 he joined the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division. He retired from the Secret Service in 1987 and then worked for Paul Mellon Security until 2000.
Throughout his career, he worked part time for Ray Welch Automotive, retiring in 2000. John was an usher at St. Ann Catholic Church for over 50 years.
In addition to his beloved wife Joanne, he is survived by his children: John (Brenda), David, Mark, and Diane. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brian (Lisa), Allison (Rob (fiancé)), Lydia, and Daniel; and one great grandchild: Gabriella. John was preceded in death by his sister Marlene and is survived by siblings: Ron (Alice), JoAnn, Jerry (Jan), Kenny, and Jim (Donna), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Murphy Funeral Home at 4510 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, VA from 4-8pm on September 21, 2023. The funeral mass will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church at 5300 N. 10th St. Arlington, VA on September 22, 2023, followed by burial at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, VA. A reception will be held at the St. Ann Parish Hall after the burial.
Memorial contributions in his honor can be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, and St. Ann Catholic Church.
